The current G15 team (2010-11 U16's) competed this past weekend at the US Club National Cup event held in San Bernardino. After dominating and impressive performances against Simi Valley Eclipse and Crown City Utd., on Saturday and Sunday with a full complement of 17 players, the team played with only eleven players on Monday and Tuesday due to injury and remaining school commitments. Despite the short roster, these courageous ladies controlled the game against Penya Barcelona from start to finish to earn a trip to the finals on Tuesday against the Sparta FC team from Utah. Still playing with only eleven players, and facing these Utah State Champions, the ladies played with a steely resolve to keep the game to 0-0 at the end of regulation. Enduring two 10-minute overtime periods, playing in 90 degree heat, the girls finally succumbed in a match determining PK shoot-out.
"This is an amazing group of young ladies" stated Coach Erik Kirsch. "I've never seen a group go through such adversity to rise above the difficulties and play with such passion, commitment and heart. I'm so proud of this whole team and I'm honored to be coaching them."
Next up for the team is a trip to Seattle for the ECNL National Cup event July 14-18. Expect a full roster and wish for some cooler playing conditions!
